Care Giving is Safe Support: Doing With Not For

Care Giving Is Support

Reading about the four elements of Active Support made me reflect on how misunderstood the role of a caregiver often is. Many people still see caregiving as simply “doing things for someone.” In reality, what we provide is support. Support in everyday tasks, social and leisure activities, physical activity. This also includes shared responsibility for routine staff tasks. These can be reminders and finding where emergency / panic buttons are, or testing fire alarms.

Support also means recognizing that everyday routines are opportunities for empowerment rather than efficiency. When caregivers slow down and invite participation, they help individuals maintain skills, confidence, and a sense of control over their own lives. Even small choices how to complete a task, when to take a break, or how to participate reinforce dignity and person-centered care.

Active Support reminds us that care is not about taking over a person’s life, but about enabling participation. Whether it is cooking a meal, going for a walk, joining a social activity, or completing daily routines, the goal is always the same: to involve the person as much as possible, in ways that are meaningful to them.

A Question That Changes Everything

My biggest takeaway from the lesson was this simple but powerful question:
If I am doing a task on my own, without the person, is it really necessary for me to be doing it alone?

That question reframes caregiving entirely. It shifts the focus from efficiency to dignity, from control to collaboration, and from “care” to genuine support. When we do with rather than for, we promote independence, confidence, and a sense of purpose, which is what quality & safe care is truly about.
